  7.     So long, La Stupenda, and goodbye again. It's hard for
  8. Australia's Dame Joan Sutherland, 64, to say addio to opera,
  9. so she did it twice. The first time was in Sydney last October,
  10. and last week in London she bade a New Year's Eve farewell to
  11. her international career where it began 38 years ago. At the
  12. Royal Opera House, the diva was a party guest in Act II of Die
  13. Fledermaus, along with Luciano Pavarotti. Sutherland cautioned
  14. that "the old voice is winding down," but the party wasn't over
  15. until she sang a final, glistening Home Sweet Home.
